i am unexpectedly betrayed when i read in a biography of Walter Benjamin that he though women hadn't any business doing criticism; we haven't the brains for it, or something.

i've concluded a few things:

- one should not cut bits off one's dog. ever. it's not cute. not useful. & cruel.

- the woman who lifted the small dog off the pedestal (?) by the leash and tail sucks.

- toy poodles are small aliens.

- Tibetan mastiffs are massive. & awesome.

- & beagles are cute. & i possibly want one. (at fifteen inches, it's not bigger than the cat. & the ears...& wagging tail...)

really, i did. in the end, though, i failed miserably at making cookies. the outsides were cooked -- burned even -- and the insides were...well...not cooked. at all.

now, instead of working on anything substantial, i'm slowly accruing a large pile of kleenex beside me as i alternate between cleaning and watching the Aussie Open. oh yeah, and scratching the cat. not, i'll confess, a very auspicious afternoon, particularly since my morning had me finishing a book before eight...

boo me.

update: apparently, what my productivity really needs is for me to grouse about being useless. so i've spent the last several hours reading (for work...maybe) & finding conferences to submit to. so less boo.

the weather report claims that it is currently 18 degrees here in the 'peg, but my feet (covered in two layers of socks) are cold. something doesn't add up.

or perhaps i'm a freak.

this must be the day that caffeine won't work. i've had 6 cups of coffee & still feel sluggish & foggy. it wouldn't be so much of a problem except that, if i want to write my last set of comps at the end of november (which i do), i have to read fifteen books of theory a month. (i had a slow summer.) so today, even the easiest stuff on my list (Fanon) registers only as static except this recurring & stubborn question i have about the desirability of the nation-state & why that seems to be the only possible model.

in other news, the mess from saturday night's dinner is finally under control -- except my study, which still looks like a bomb hit it (& i totally don't have the energy to care.)

i should really stop blogging & go back to work.

i went running -- without being chased -- again for the first time in almost two months (having popped my achilles last time out). forgot, though, how long it takes to regain my stride & comfort after i've taken a break; nonetheless, i managed twenty-five minutes at a fairly brisk pace. i'm still out of breath, exhilarated & energized, even though i'm not sure i'll be able to sustain serious training for quite a while yet.

note: maybe running is like blogging in that, not having blogged for a while, i find that i'm having a hard time finding a rhythm to my sentences.
